Abstract

We propose an approach to generating widely tunable and highly coherent optical frequency combs (OFCs) using an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) cascaded modulators. In the proposed system, an OEO operates as a pure microwave source, which ensures high coherence of the generated OFCs. The experimental results reveal a frequency tuning range of 6-18 GHz and a phase noise of -130.4 dBc/Hz@10 kHz of the microwave signals generated by the OEO. Based on this LNOI-empowered OEO, OFCs with tunable spacing from 6 GHz to 18 GHz and over 15 comb lines are generated. Besides, a tunable center wavelength of 1530-1570 nm of the generated OFCs is also demonstrated.
