Abstract

This paper proposes a low-profile, broadband, and bidirectional folded transmitarray metasurface for orbital angular momentum (OAM) generation. The proposed metasurface integrates two broadband circularly polarized (CP) magnetoelectric dipoles within a dual-layer receiver-transmitter (Rx-Tx) architecture. This configuration enables independent manipulation of the transmission and reflection phases through element rotation. Unlike conventional designs relying on specular reflection, a reflection-phase compensation strategy is introduced to substantially reduce the overall structural profile. The proposed metasurface generates high-purity (>93%) circularly polarized vortex beams with topological charges of l = +2 in the forward direction and l = +1 in the backward direction over the operating frequency range of 12.5-17 GHz. These results demonstrate the strong potential of the proposed structure for compact and miniaturized OAM-based communication systems.
