Abstract

Active direction of arrival estimation system can significantly improve the degrees of freedom (DOFs), since the vectorized covariance matrix of the data measurements from transmit and receive arrays can be considered as observations from a augmented virtual array, whose elements are given by the difference co-Array of the sum co-Array (DCSC). This article presents a generalized methodology to design the high performance active non-uniform linear arrays (NLAs) after performing detailed analyses of bridges between active NLAs and passive NLAs. Closed-form solutions in terms of positions of physical/virtual sensors and DOF capacities are derived. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
