Abstract

The aim is to study the edge maintained image enlargement algorithms. The reason for zigzag artifacts of interpolated images is analyzed, based on which a fast edge-directed interpolation method is proposed. The unknown pixels in high resolution images were divided into two classes. They were estimated through diagonal or horizontal or vertical directions pixels according to their orientation. Since the algorithm exploits direction information and average computation, the edges of interpolated image are smooth. The algorithm needs no iteration and is simple to implement. Experimental results show its feasibility.
