Abstract

Ultraviolet spectral analysis shows that the absorption spectrum of ethyl benzene is quite similar to that of polystyrene. So the content of styrene in water soluble block copolymer of acrylamide and styrene (PAM-b-PS) can be determined by using ethyl benzene as reference substance. Ethyl benzene was solubilized in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micell solution, and the calibration curve was established. After that, the contents of styrene in several copolymers were determined, and the result was compared with those of element analysis. This methed is sensitive and accurate.
