Abstract

This paper presents a miniaturized broadband quadrature coupler using silicon-based 3-D integration process. The coupler consists of two Lange couplers cascaded with two T-networks. The Lange couplers are used to extend matching bandwidth. T-networks are designed to realize good amplitude and phase imbalance performances. The coupler size is significantly reduced by using the silicon-based 3-D integration process. Within 0.8~1.6 GHz, the simulated maximum insertion loss is 1.3 dB, and the return loss and isolation are better than 21.4 dB and 20.5 dB, respectively. In addition, the amplitude imbalance and phase imbalance are less than 0.37 dB and 4.1°, respectively. Furthermore, the coupler size is 0.030λ0×0.032λ0×0.002λ0, where λ0 is the free space wavelength at the center frequency.
