N2 - Recently, flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) have garnered significant attention from both academic and industrial communities, owing to their recognition as an efficient energy storage technology. The performance of the self-powered motor is a pivotal component in determining the energy conversion efficiency, dynamic characteristics and overall reliability of the FESS. In this paper, a new scheme of self-powered motor is proposed, which integrates it with the electromagnetic coupler. The electromagnetic performance and thermal characteristics of the motor under different operating conditions are obtained by simulation. The simulation results show that the scheme has low no-load loss under both rated and overload conditions, small temperature rise under overload conditions and strong overload capacity. In addition, the highly integrated design brings the advantages of low cost and high control freedom. This study provides significant theoretical insights and practical implications, advancing the application of flywheel energy storage technology in the field of renewable energy.
