Abstract
Method of parameter sensitivity is applied to study the counter-intuitive phenomenon observed in numerical, analytical and experimental studies on the dynamic response of elastic-plastic beams. Direct differentiation approach and central difference approach are used in parameter sensitivity analysis. It is shown that the direct differentiation approach is more suitable for extremely parameter-sensitive problems. A correlation between the parameter sensitivity analysis and the occurrence of the counter-intuitive phenomenon of beam dynamics is established, which is then used to identify the range of the loading parameters for the occurrence of the counter-intuitive phenomenon.
