Abstract

Research and experience in the development of a 20 Mvar advanced static var generator (ASVG) were used to analyze the effect of the system on the ASVG at the moment of a sudden fault in the power system. Digital simulations and vector graphs of the voltages and currents in the system and in the ASVG were used to analyze the transition of the ASVG from the normal operating conditions to the fault condition. When the system voltage, especially the phase of the voltage, changes suddenly, the proper selection of the control strategy and synchronous signal can minimize or avoid the ASVG faults to some extend. Thus, the ASVG survival ability in the power system can be enhanced.
