Abstract

A numerical simulation is presented for 3-D filling progress of engine cylinder head casting. The incompressible, Newtonian fluid filling governing equations are solved using finite element method. The molten metal front is tracked by the pseudo-concentration approach which is the volume of fluid (VOF) method. Numerical simulation predicts molten metal velocity field and temperature field in the filling progress. Filling of casting thus is be evaluated. The simulation results can offer a helpful reference to the parameter design of cylinder head casting.
