Abstract
Due to the unique ability of levitating a charged char particle in a chamber, the electrodynamic balance technique can be used to probe the combustion process of single char particle in situ. The principles of this technique and the operation methodology in conjunction with it are briefly presented in this review. Furthermore, based on the review of its application in studying coal combustion, the feasibility and prospect of combining this technique with time resolved spectroscopy in this area are discussed. The motivation of this paper is to introduce this new approach to domestic researchers and stimulate more research.
