Abstract

This paper propose a high dynamic range (HDR) image enhancement algorithm which is based on the retinal brightness adaptation and lateral inhibition competition mechanism of ganglion cells. First, the degraded image is processed with the modified TAN function to implement the adaptive mapping of global brightness. Then, an ON/OFF dual antagonist model improved by introducing the factor of central excitement/inhibitor is used to enhance the local details. Experimental result shows that this algorithm could adjust adaptively the brightness of image areas at which the brightness is over-bright or dark, effectively. The color information of details is highlighted and the original color performance would be preserved. As a whole, the overall visual perception of the color image is significantly improved.
