Abstract

A regularised Capon beamformer under multipath or smart jamming environments is designed wherein the desired signal and correlated interferences are decorrelated by a modal smoothing operation. Unlike conventional spatial smoothing, modal smoothing is not limited to the arrays of spatially-coupled subarrays, and does not decrease the array aperture. By incorporating a soft subspace projection, this beamformer is still robust to the look direction error even in the presence of unknown non-uniform noise.
