Abstract

A new mixed alkali metal borate LiCs[B5O8(OH)]·H2O (1) has been made under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, a = 10.1523(9) Å, b = 8.4516(6) Å, c = 12.2178(17) Å, β = 122.522(8)°, V = 883.93(14) Å3 and Z = 4. 1 exhibits a novel fluctuant anionic [B5O8(OH)]n2n − layers based on the unusual B5O10(OH) oxoboron clusters, showing a four-connected spl topology net with the Schläfli symbol of {44·62}. The layers are further linked via the Li[sbnd]O[sbnd]Cs chains and H-bonds to form a new 3-D structure. The cutoff edge of 1 is below 190 nm and it has a band gap of 5.82 eV.
