Abstract

A new fabrication technique to manufacture an MEA using extrusion slot coating of ionomer onto the catalyzed GDL was presented. Preliminary coating tests were conducted to study the feasibility and effectiveness to directly coat Nafion® D2021 onto the catalyzed Toray 060 carbon paper. The uniformity of the coated membrane and the penetration of the Nafion® dispersion into the catalyst layer were analyzed. After that, pressing and blowing operations were introduced to increase the membrane uniformity and decrease the penetration of Nafion® dispersion and effects of these operations were analyzed.
