Abstract
The dynamic failure mechanism of rock in intermediate and low strain-rate was analyzed from three aspects-failure modes, energy absorption, and mechanical parameters, A new method to calculate the dynamic compressive strength of rock was presented. A pseudo-static method combined with the principle of virtual work was used to build the formula. The work done by external force to rock was considered more than the internal energy loss, and the damage happened because of the rock cannot endure the external load. Therefore, the dynamic compressive strength σcd is equal to the sum of the static compressive strength σc' and the increased strength by the strain-rate effect. Then the calculated value of the dynamic compressive strength was compared with the experimental results in literatures.
