Abstract

In the process of constructing “new development paradigm”, the layout of “innovation chain management” has urgency and practical significance. In this context, leading companies, as the most dynamic innovation actor in market and society, began to march towards multiple fields in the whole industrial chain. However, the uncertainty and discontinuity of the external environment pose severe challenges to the construction and implementation of firm’ s innovation strategy, and it is urgent to put forward an “innovation chain management” (ICM) framework from the perspective of new resource synergy. In general, there are at least three core challenges to construct the framework of ICM. First, the problem of “multi-actor collaboration” in innovation chain management. Compared with the traditional innovation management process, the most prominent feature of ICM is that it puts “multi-actor collaboration” at the center of innovation. Traditional innovation management goal is usually clear and relatively simple, but in the process of ICM, innovators need to manage different goals at multiple nodes in the chain simultaneously to make them serve an overall goal. The complex conflicts and disagreements among multiple goals will bring great challenges to the decision-making of innovators. Second, the problem of “resource coordination” in innovation chain management. For a long time, resource collaboration in innovation has been one of the hot topics discussed in the academic circle. For enterprises, the conflict between “expanding the innovation chain” and “limited resources” will become more obvious, and the management of resource conflict in multiple innovation nodes on the “chain” will require a more holistic perspective of resource collaboration. The third is the “time synergy” of ICM. When conducting ICM, each innovation node will have “time mismatching” in the R&D cycle due to its own attributes. If the problem of mismatching is not properly handled, the overall efficiency of the innovation chain will be weakened. Meaningful innovation (MI), as the emerging paradigm of innovation in recent years, provides a new perspective for the collaboration of firm’s innovation goals, resources and timing under the new context. Based on it, this study explores the meaning-oriented Innovation chain management (ICM) framework, focusing on the following main issues: First, based on the Meaningful Innovation (MI) framework, it reviews the theoretical basis of Meaning Orientation (MO) and Innovation chain (IC). Second, it explores and constructs the conceptual framework of meaning-oriented innovation chain management, and defines the connotations of key relevant constructs. Thirdly, centering on the core difficulties and pain points of enterprise innovation chain management in the new development paradigm, realistic strategies are proposed based on the framework and future prospects are made. This research puts forward that the ICM framework constructed with MO as the core may help realize the integration of “industrial chain” and “value chain”, and significantly improve the overall efficiency of innovation chain management of firms under the new development paradigm.
