Abstract

To understand the knowledge diffusion of Semenoff’s seminal work on thermal explosions theory, 317 citing publications of Semenoff (1928) were searched and downloaded from the Web of Science core collection. The citing publications of the thermal explosions theory were analyzed in the four aspects: (1) The temporal and geospatial characters of the knowledge diffusion, (2) The core authors in thermal explosion knowledge diffusion, (3) hot topics of the knowledge diffusion and (4) the reference co-citation network analysis of the knowledge diffusion. The results show that the knowledge diffusion of Semenoff (1928) has a continuous growth trend in the past 93 years, showing long-term influences in the scientific community. The paper was diffused to 37 different countries/ regions and mainly diffused to the USA, Israel, United Kingdom, China, and Germany. It shows that these countries/ regions are active in thermal explosion research. At the institutional level, the paper has diffused to 187 different institutions, and mainly diffused to Ben Gurion Univ Negev, Univ Leeds, Natl Yunlin Univ Sci & Technol, Russian Acad Sci and Beijing Inst Technol. In the authors’ aspect, the paper was mainly diffused to Gol’dshtein Vladimir, Gray P, Boddington T Goldfarb I and Zinoviev A. These authors are the followers of the Semenoff in thermal explosion area, who also made significant contributions in thermal explosion research. In the analysis of the topics, the paper was mainly diffused to thermal explosion-related topics and methods, including integral manifolds, combustion, differential scanning calorimetry, runaway reaction, and self-healing. The reference co-citation network of citing publications in thermal explosion demonstrated the intellectual bases and research evolution of Semenoff’s work in a different period, revealing the early ages and recent progress of thermal explosion research.
