Abstract
The superstructure, deck, and other features of ships produce large separated regions in the air-flow over the ship and a variety of vortex flows generated mainly by edges in the geometry. These time-varying turbulent airwake can have a significant impact on aircraft handing qualities, causing sufficient pilot workload to reduce the probability of a safe landing to unacceptable levels. This work reviews the progress in the research of ship airwake. Firstly, the basic characters of airwake are summarized. Several accidents caused by airwake are presented to emphasize the importance of the research on ship airwake. Secondly, seven typical collaborative projects at home and abroad are introduced and discussed. The essential measurement technologies in these projects are classified and compared in the aspects of wind tunnel experiment, fight test and numerical simulation, respectively. Finally, the factors affecting the airwake structures are concluded and discussed. The future challenges are pointed out in the end.
