Abstract

A high-pressure molding system was designed to reduce defects and improve the density of melt-cast explosives. Simulant composites with physical properties similar to typical TNT-based and DNAN-based melt-cast explosives were used in high-pressure molding experiments to investigate the effect of loading pressure, holding time and loading timing on the relative density and casting quality of the charge. The results show that in addition to the liquid feeding, there are also semi-solid feeding and solid feeding during the high-pressure molding process, which significantly reduces defects and increases relative density of charge. The loading pressure should be set between the triaxial compressive yield strength and ultimate strength of the charge; the holding time should exceed the solidification time of charge; the loading timing should ensure that there is no solidified layer in the mold. The simulant composites charge with the loading pressure of 25.45MPa, the holding time of 60min and the loading timing related internal temperature of 80°C has no defects and the relative density reaches as high as 99.90% .
