Abstract
Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) composites with imidazole type ionic liquids were prepared. The effects of the type and amount of ionic liquids on the limit oxygen index, heat release, smoke release and thermal stability properties of TPU were analyzed. The results show that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (EmimBr) has a better flame retardant effect on TPU compared with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (EmimPF6) and 1-hexadecyl-3- methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C16mimPF6). The limit oxygen index of the TPU composite with 3% EmimBr reaches to 24.3%, the peak heat release and peak smoke release of the TPU composite are 23.9% and 37.5% respectively lower than those of TPU, the thermal stability is improved at high temperatures. Therefore, ionic liquids will be expected to further explore in flame-retarded TPU.
