Abstract
The inherent non-axisymmetric structure of the volute makes the circumferential flow of the volute exit very uneven, causing an adverse effect on the flow in the downstream parts and an existence of a non-axisymmetric flow phenomenon in the flow field of the nozzle ring and impeller. Based on an analysis of the non-axisymmetric flow field structure of a variable radial turbine, a design scheme of non-uniformly arranged guide vanes and optimized nozzle base connecting arm structure were proposed to control the non-axisymmetric flow in the turbine. Not only the optimization objective and the flowchart of non-uniformly arranged guide vanes but also the modification design scheme of nozzle seat connecting arm were raised. Comparative tests of the turbine performance validate the effectiveness of the design scheme. The results show that the isentropic efficiency of the retrofitted turbine is enhanced in different guide vane opening and different similar rotational speeds. The retrofitted turbine has more significant improvement in the isentropic efficiency at the operating conditions of large speed ratio. At the maximum guide vane opening, the relative improvement of the turbine isentropic efficiency after modification is 7.53% as compared with that before modification.
