From November 2008 to February 2012, he was a Chair Professor at the School of Computer Science, Robert Gordon University, UK, and a member of the Management Committee of the University's Research Center for Innovation, Technology and Sustainable Development. From March 2012 to February 2018, he served as a distinguished professor of "Tianjin Thousand Talents Plan" in School of Computer Science, Tianjin University. He joined the School of Computer Science, Beijing Institute of Technology in March 2018.
[Teaching and research work] He has been engaged in research work in the fields of information retrieval, natural language processing and artificial intelligence for a long time, aiming to build theories and methods of multi-modal information acquisition, interaction and knowledge discovery that meet the characteristics of human information reasoning and cognition. Especially in recent years, he has advocated and promoted the research of exploratory information retrieval and interaction model based on quantum mechanics theory. During his full-time teaching in the UK, he chaired 12 projects of the UK National Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation (EPSRC), the Royal Society, the UK National Information Systems Council (JISC), the EU Sixth and Seventh Frameworks and Horizon 2020. After returning to China in 2012, he presided over 1 key and surface project of the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 key research and development project, and participated in 2 national 973 projects. He has published more than 220 academic papers, including high-level SCI journal papers such as ACM TOIS, IEEE TKDE, IEEE TNNLS, ACM TIST, JASIST, and more than 100 top-level international conference papers such as AAAI, ACL, IJCAI, SIGIR, and WWW. In the Expert search task of the international evaluation conference TREC 2006, the expert search system developed by its leadership team achieved first place in most performance indicators. He received the Best paper Award from the European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR2011) and the International Conference on Information Retrieval Theory (ICTIR2011) and the IBM Innovation Achievement Award in 2006 and 2007.
