Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in 1940 and has been a key university within the framework of multiple national higher education projects since the establishment of the People's Republic of China. There are 22 academic schools in BIT, and 73 undergraduate programs, 48 master programs and 39 Ph.D programs. The total number of students is 35,000, including 15,000 undergraduate students, 15,000 master students and over 5,000 PhDs. There are over 5,800 faculty members and administrative staff, about 2,600 of which are faculty members, and over 40 are members of the Chinese Academy of Science or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
BIT is the Top 10 most difficult university for admission in China. BIT students have won consecutive championships and awards in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions both domestically and internationally, with the number and quality of awards ranking the top in China. For instance, BIT won two general championships of China International "Internet plus" Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the "Challenge Cup" of China Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Project Competition and two championships of the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge.
BIT's annual research grant is over 1 billion USD and is Top 1 nation-wide in terms of research grant per capita. BIT has won 21 national science and technology awards, and ranked Top 10 in terms of the number of awards. BIT ranked 129th globally according to ARWU, and the 179th in the USNews the 275th in the THE and the 302nd in the QS, with an average of 318 places up in the four major rankings over the past 6 years. Engineering, Computer Science, Material Science and Chemistry ranked top 1‰ according to the ESI. The green and sustainable science and technology ranked Top 1 globally according to the latest US News Global University Ranking.
BIT signed institutional cooperation agreements with over 400 universities from 80 countries and regions globally. There are over 3,200 international students from 150 countries. In the accreditation of higher education quality for international students studying in China, BIT ranked Top 1 with the highest assessment in 2023.
