Abstract
An improved achromatic holographic waveguide display system with high efficiency is proposed, which is composed of an in-coupled planar hologram and an outcoupled volume hologram. The efficiency is improved, compared with the previous system proposed by Shi et al. (Appl. Opt. 51, 4703-4078 [2012]), and the loss resulting from multiple exposures is reduced by the combination of the planar hologram and the volume hologram. The basic idea and principles are described, and the experiments are performed. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved system can achieve higher diffraction efficiency and reduce the experimental complexity of multiple exposures. It could be a potential method for improving the efficiency and correcting the chromatic dispersion in the waveguide display systems.
