Abstract

To improve the mechanical properties of hydroxyl-termineted polybutadiene propellant, using the property organic montmorillonite(OMMT)can be exfoliated into nanosheets by HTPB binder, the OMMT modified HTPB propellant was prepared by introducing OMMT into the HTPB propellant. The effect of OMMT introduction on the mechanical properties and rheological properties of propellant were investigated by using tensile testing machine and rheometer. The results show that the introduction of OMMT can significantly improve the mechanical properties of HTPB propellant, which has the effect of enhancing and toughening. The strength and elongation at break are increased by 78% and 21%, respectively. The reason may be that in the binder matrix, montmorillonite exists in the system in the form of nanosheets, which enhances the mechanical properties of the binder matrix. The introduction of OMMT can also improve the processing properties of the propellant slurry, reduce the mixing viscosity of the OMMT propellant slurry, and accelerate the solidification rate of the propellant slurry. After the introduction of OMMT, the pot life of the propellant slurry reduces from 6.25h to 4.16h.
